I assume you already have one (copper) washer on there? I've thought about stacking washers on the plug so that it doesn't need to go all the way in to tighten. So I expected an easy oil change, however the oversized M14 x 1.50p isn't long enough to tighten all the way and now the slow leak continues. In case this is a poor repair, you'll know what not to do! That said, it looks like a perfectly "cromulent" (The Simpsons ™ ) repair. Maybe that's a brass insert in hole? Hard to see head under bus, easier to see after taking OP. It has a hex head, is brass, but is not seated flush with case. Though I have my doubts about the QC of this shop, they wouldn't use a pipe plug. Plus you can buy one of those timesert kits for fixing spark plug threads. Both do a good job, the timesert is a bit more trick. Timesert or helicoil pick your poison and fix it right. Ultimately not good as something designed to come out every 5k kms. The conical plugs are like an NPt fitting. Probably why he used it, case was probably stripped already. They also have a longer thread than a drain plug. Spark plugs that use a 13/16 socket are a m14 x 1.5 mm thread. I would think a good insert is the best solution in both these cases. Can't say I like the sound of that - does it have a square head and stick down about a half inch? Sounds like they used a tapered thread plug (sort of like a common pipe plug). Vanagon VAG GAS engine swap Google Group: I've heard stripped threads in case isn't uncommon, so just a heads up. Don't know if they had to chase, tap, or (?) the drain hole threads to accept this plug or if this conical plug simply gets tighter as it goes in. There's a $2.00 charge for a "conical plug". I recently took my '88 in for servicing at a Vanagon aware shop. Does anyone know what the size of an actual oil drain plug would be for a 1988 Vanagon? I've just now replaced the oil for the second time and now the plug is done and there's a slow leak. The threads fit (for a time) and it takes a 21 mm socket to get the plug out. So the previous owner of my 88 Vanagon was pretty crafty and instead of paying for a new oil drain plug, it appears he decided to make his own using a spark plug.
